SPOTLIGHT

Spotlight on... Groundworkers

Throwing the spotlight on groundworks – groundworkers have a vital job.

Usually, the first tradesperson on a construction site, groundworkers set out and prepare the sub-surfaces ready for the structural work to begin, installing drainage systems, concreting, carrying out de-vegetation, interpreting design specifications and more. Groundworkers work throughout a construction project and often carry out the final tasks, such as laying driveways and footpaths.

Two of our groundworkers, Merlin and Mark found different routes into the industry, but both have found rewarding careers with the opportunity for workplace learning, here are their stories…

Merlin Wynne-Golledge

Merlin started with us as a site labourer working at the Colchester Garrison, initially he took on the role as a summer job, but 10 years on, and several qualifications later, he has now worked his way up to an integral member of our groundworks team.

To move on from a general labourer Merlin undertook a Groundworks Apprenticeship. The apprenticeship provided him with the skills he needed to help set out and prepare a site ready for structural work to begin. Merlin has also gained CPCS Excavator, Dumper and Roller certification, First Aid and his Streetworks Qualification.

For Merlin the best part of his job, is working closely together with the site team and to have the friendship of his colleagues.

Currently, Merlin is working on a Net Zero Carbon Scheme project in Thundersley to deliver 44 much needed affordable homes.

Mark Harrison

Mark joined us as a machine driver to work on our flagship development at Lawford Green some 6 years ago. Previously having worked with one of our site managers Mark quickly become a respected member of our team at Lawford.

Mark has a vast amount of experience in groundworks, working alongside his father from the age of 16 across construction sites in London to later carrying on the family tradition and working alongside his own son.

Mark has undertaken further training with the company and gained his Blue Excavator CPCS card with lifting operations qualification.

For Mark the best part of the job is being outside, the variety of projects and working with a good team of people. Mark is now working on our housing development in Weeley, our second largest land purchase, where we will be delivering 280 new homes.

APPRENTICES

Apprenticeship Programme

There are many opportunities open in Construction, to support this we have been running our current Apprenticeship programme for 10 years which we are immensely proud of.

Our programme seeks to develop and retain our own ‘home grown’ talent with the passing down of knowledge from generation to generation and ensuring that our choice of tradesmen for the future have matured with us and absorbed the values of the company - a reputation for quality building offering expertise and reliability.

We offer a wide range of apprenticeships including groundworks, carpentry, painting and decorating, bricklaying and trainee Quantity Surveyors.

Our apprentices come from a range of backgrounds; local schools/colleges, career changers, people transitioning from the armed forces and veterans and through supported employment initiatives including those run by Essex County Council.

We have a fantastic team of Apprentices on board, take a look at our video to find out more…

We advise anyone starting an apprenticeship with us that although the apprenticeship may be for 3 years - it is only the beginning! We instil in all our apprentices that the first 3 years is to learn their craft but the next 3 years is about becoming a skilled tradesman.

We are always looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals to join our growing team, the opportunities are there to explore!

Awards

We have supported local awards for the apprentices, to not only promote our apprentices locally but to give them a further sense of achievement.

Local awards include: -

  • National Federation of Builders – Suffolk Area Joint Consultative Committee
  • The Suffolk Show’s Skill Competition
  • ECTA Excellent Trainee Awards
  • Tendring Blue Ribbon Awards
  • National Apprenticeship Service Awards

HISTORY

Our story is over four generations long. It is a story of a family steeped in the tradition of building & service.

History

Rose Builders is a family-owned company, formed in 1995 and steeped in the tradition of building and customer service.

It is the company that evolved from H L Rose & Sons established around 1896 and trading through four generations into the current Rose Builders Limited.

The business was founded by Harry Rose, a bricklayer who came to Mistley in the 1890s. At the time Mistley had become a major centre of the late 19th-century malt industry and the expansion of the maltings buildings provided the basis of the business.

The business expanded into housing, and through the 1920’s and 30’s created many of the ribbon developments seen today throughout Mistley, Manningtree and Lawford.

Today, the company has a workforce of over 200, supplemented by specialist subcontractors. We work across a wide spectrum of sectors, including commercial, industrial, leisure, education, housing and healthcare and carry out new build, refurbishment and extension projects. Our residential development for sale is a rapidly expanding part of the business. We resource this from our direct labour force of skilled craftspeople, in-house joinery shop and plant division together with our supply chain.

We believe that the success of Rose Builders Limited is founded on a reputation in the community for high quality, traditional workmanship combined with our commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.

We ensure we deliver an exceptional product and excellent customer satisfaction.
