New Performing Arts Centre
Sixth Form College, Colchester.
This project evolved from an initial investigation to establish the ground conditions / void behind a retaining wall to a first floor building into a full blown underground excavation and basement formation to create from nothing a new Performing Arts Studio under a first floor theatre / gymnasium. Technically challenging issues of temporary support works meant extreme caution by all involved.
Nearly 200 skips were excavated brought up and out to ground level through a door access and through which a heavily reinforced Caltite waterproof ready mixed concrete basement / retaining wall structure was built. All within a fully operational Sixth Form College with over 3000 students using the same access every day. Materials and plant access were arranged out of normal hours and as an example ready mix concrete delivered as early as 5.00am to ensure trades and plant were all clear before 8.00am and the teachers and students arrival.
The project provides the College with additional teaching space on a ‘landlocked’ town centre, very restricted site.
