Manningtree’s Shakespearean Claim to Fame!

Our little town of Manningtree has some truly amazing historical links, including a fascinating nod from none other than William Shakespeare himself!

In Henry IV, Part One, Prince Hal jests about “the devil that roasted Manningtree ox with a pudding in his belly.” This playful reference to our town is said to be inspired by the Manningtree Fair, where an entire ox was traditionally roasted. According to local legend, Shakespeare may have passed through Manningtree as a young actor and witnessed this festive scene first hand.

To honour this unique connection, a metal sculpture of the ‘Manningtree Ox’ by Colin Wilkin now adorns the old fire station, complete with a pudding in its belly! Our hardworking team recently helped renovate the station, ensuring this fun piece of local history shines for all to see.
