Extreme Abseil – Supporting the Butterfly Appeal

Our courageous team—Andy, Berenika, Jamie, Clair, Simon, Charlotte, Justine, and Lauren—will be taking in the breathtaking views of Ipswich as they face the thrilling challenge of Ipswich Hospital’s Tower ‘Extreme Abseil.’ On Saturday, May 3rd at 11 am, they’ll descend an incredible 135 feet (41 meters) in support of the Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity ‘Butterfly Appeal.’

The Butterfly Appeal raises vital funds to support patients receiving end-of-life care and their loved ones.

The Butterfly Service ensures that no one dies alone. Led by dedicated butterfly coordinators, compassionate volunteers provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support during a patient’s final days and hours.

Volunteers offer a range of support—sitting quietly at a patient’s bedside, reading stories or poetry, sharing memories, playing music, or simply holding a hand. They also provide essential assistance to loved ones, whether through offering a listening ear, providing a break from the ward, or guiding them to other helpful services. Through their presence and kindness, volunteers ensure patients feel cared for while easing the burden on families, friends, and carers during an incredibly difficult time.

Established in 2019, the Butterfly Service supports patients receiving end-of-life care at Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals, as well as community hospitals including Clacton, Harwich, Aldeburgh, Bluebird Lodge, and Felixstowe General Hospital. Volunteers visit patients who may otherwise be alone, ensuring that no one has to face their final moments without a caring presence.

By taking part in the Extreme Abseil, our team is helping to sustain this invaluable service—ensuring that patients and their loved ones receive the compassion and support they need when it matters most.
