Almshouse scheme aims to get people on the housing ladder
A ceremony has marked the commencement of works on a ground-breaking village housing scheme in Lawford, Manningtree. Children from Lawford Primary School and Manningtree High School were invited to witness as builders began construction of eight new almshouses.
The homes, built by Rose Builders as part of its Summers Park development, will be donated to the new Lawford Housing Enterprise Trust and will be rented to people living in or with strong connections to the village. After a period of time, a proportion of the tenant’s rent will be refunded as a lump sum for them to put towards a deposit for them to buy their own home. This scheme is thought to be the only one of its kind in the country.
The two bedroom properties will be available in late spring next year, and the details of how to apply for tenancy will be issued later this year.
