New Homes
Chambers Place, Bures St Mary, CO8 5AB
We are thrilled to be part of the transformation of the former Chambers Bus Depot in Bures St Mary, Suffolk.
This carefully planned, redevelopment of a vacant brownfield site will introduce 14 residential homes by preserving the original frontage alongside sustainably designed new structures. Situated in the heart of the Bures St Mary Conservation Area, the site is directly across from the Grade I listed St Mary’s Church and close to other historic landmarks.
The Chambers Bus Company established its original presence on this site in the late 1870s, providing horse-drawn carriage services to nearby towns. By the 1920s, the company expanded its offerings to motorised buses with regular routes. The site remained active until the business was sold in 2012, after which the depot gradually fell into disrepair.
Our design team conducted a thorough analysis of the site’s historical evolution, existing structures, and heritage significance, shaping a masterplan that retains the key street-facing elevations while incorporating a new community-focused mews development at the rear. Collaboration with residents and conservation officers fostered a shared vision, with particular emphasis on preserving the iconic 1920 steel-and-glass bus garage frontage.
The vision for Chambers Place centres on creating homes that honour the historic character of Bures while catering to modern needs. Each home is thoughtfully designed to complement the local architecture, with an emphasis on sustainability and low maintenance. Chambers Place aims to foster a true sense of community, offering an inviting space where neighbours can connect and embrace village life.
The landscape design enhances biodiversity with native plantings and habitat creation, while improvements to site access include widened sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and better visibility to support safe vehicle and pedestrian movement, addressing former challenges associated with the site’s bus depot layout.
Works on the development are due to start next year (2025), if you would like to be kept up to date on progress or wish to register your interest in the development, please contact Alex Leader on email: aleader@rosebuilders.co.uk
